The Problem

Sam Baking High had already built local recognition and a base of loyal customers in Melbourne, but with competition intensifying the client wanted to shift the centre of growth online. The obstacle was that the website and online store ranked poorly in search results, leaving prospective customers unable to discover the brand through search at all.

Baking is a category with exceptionally clear search intent and exceptionally short timeframes. Someone searching "birthday cakes Melbourne" usually needs a cake within days, and there is virtually no extended comparison process — they will choose from the first few results and place an order. That means a low ranking is not "slightly less traffic"; it is being out of the running entirely: the order is taken by a shop further up the page before the customer has ever seen the brand.

Melbourne’s baking market is fiercely contested, with large numbers of competitors clustered on core terms like "birthday cakes Melbourne" and "celebration cakes", where rankings had long refused to move. Even where online business had begun to develop, overall conversion remained weak — the traffic arriving was not being guided effectively toward an order.

The client needed a systematic SEO programme: to break through on the most fiercely contested core terms, and to convert the resulting traffic into actual orders.

Our Solution

Two characteristics of the online baking business determined the approach: demand is highly localised, and it concentrates heavily around specific dates. The programme therefore centred on contesting position in local search and preparing for seasonal peaks in advance, with product pages and the purchase flow built to catch the resulting traffic.

Advancing on Core and Long-Tail Terms Together

As a local bakery, local SEO was the main battleground. Industry analysis established the core competitive terms — "birthday cakes Melbourne", "cake shop melbourne" — and we extended downward into specific product and occasion terms such as "macaron boxes in melbourne", "cartoon cakes" and "dessert delivery melbourne", optimising the corresponding pages for each.

Long-tail terms served a particular purpose here. Core terms are fiercely contested and slow to move, whereas long-tail queries carrying clear purchase intent — such as "best cakes in Melbourne" — are far less competitive and could deliver real orders while the core term rankings were still climbing. That both secured short-term output and accumulated the authority and user behaviour signals the core terms needed.

Restructuring the Site by Product Category

The original site structure was disorganised, with no clear product categorisation, making it hard for users to find the range they wanted. We reorganised it into birthday cakes, celebration cakes, desserts and other categories, each with its own page and explicit internal linking.

This serves both audiences at once: users follow their own need straight to the right category, while search engines can clearly identify each page’s topic, so category queries land on the right page rather than piling onto the homepage and diluting one another. Every page’s title, meta description and keyword tags were mapped strictly to its target terms, and URL structures were simplified and standardised throughout.

Rebuilding Product Pages and Conversion Elements

Cakes are an intensely visual product, and the quality of the product page presentation directly determines order rates. The original pages were cluttered and made it difficult for customers to understand the detail. We equipped every product with high-quality photography, detailed descriptions, and the critical decision information — price, sizes, customisation options — precisely what a customer must confirm before ordering, and where a single missing item can cause hesitation.

We also added customer reviews and recommended product modules. For a custom cake — a product you cannot see before paying for it — genuine reviews are the most direct way to remove doubt.

Content and Promotions Built Around the Seasonal Calendar

Baking demand concentrates heavily around holidays and seasonal peaks. We planned seasonal content in advance — "Christmas custom cake ideas", "Valentine’s Day chocolate cakes" and similar — establishing rankings before search volume spiked, because terms like these take weeks of accumulation and publishing at the last minute is too late.

Everyday content covered cake customisation processes and ingredient selection, extending time on site and building professional trust. On promotions, we paired seasonal and holiday timing with limited-time discounts and special offers, converting the attention that content generated into actual orders at the peak of demand.

Local and Industry Link Building

We built partnerships with baking blogs, food sites and Melbourne local publications to secure backlinks from high-authority sources.

Local links matter especially here — they strengthen two signals at once: search engines’ assessment of the site’s authority, and the geographic relevance that says "this is a well-known Melbourne bakery", which is the core factor in local search ranking.

The Result

From January 2024 to January 2025: website impressions rose 253%, website clicks rose 237%, average keyword ranking improved by 36 positions, and organic traffic grew 85%. Over the same period sales volume rose 123.19% year on year and revenue grew 117.6%.

Breaking through on the core keywords was the turning point of this project. Terms like "birthday cakes Melbourne" and "celebration cakes melbourne" had long been held by competitors; all now rank on the first page. For a category where searching and buying are effectively the same act, the difference between the first page and the second is not a matter of traffic volume but of whether there is any business at all — a customer who needs a cake within days is not scrolling to page two.

Impressions growing 253% against clicks at 237% shows click-through rate was not diluted. The additional impressions did not come from padding out irrelevant broad terms but from genuinely relevant queries that users clicked — the result of precise coverage across local and product-specific keywords.

Sales volume growing 123.19% against revenue at 117.6% — two figures very close together — means average order value held steady, and the growth was not bought with discounting. For a category as sensitive to margin structure as baking, this matters: volume growth bought with discounts often produces no actual profit, whereas this growth was achieved within the existing price structure.

Sales volume growth (123.19%) also significantly outpaced organic traffic growth (85%), indicating conversion efficiency itself improved. That comes from the product page rebuild — high-quality photography, complete size and customisation options, and genuine customer reviews let a customer confirm exactly what they will receive before paying. For a custom product you cannot see at the point of purchase, removing that uncertainty is the most effective conversion optimisation there is.

Sam Baking High now holds a stable position on Melbourne’s most fiercely contested baking keywords, genuinely extending its established local reputation into the online market.
